(Alternative News Headlines)---DAYTONA BEACH SHORES | The issue of an oil spill hundreds of miles away is hitting close to home.

Stetson University student, Helena Cunningham, used the social Internet website, Facebook, to bring a group of protesters together.
They began their march in Daytona Beach Shores protesting the oil spill in the Gulf.

"It's a probability that if it's not on our beach, it could be in Brevard, it could be on the Keys, it's in our state," Cunningham said.

"You gotta do something if you believe in a cause, you gotta practice what you preach," said protester Straun Wagner.
Some beachgoers applauded the group's effort, while others questioned the march on an oil-free beach.

Some said the march may send the wrong message that the oil spill is not limited to the Gulf Coast.

"Over here in Daytona, I believe it gives them the impression that the oil is here. That we're getting the oil coming up on our shores here," said Mary Burkard.

"I think people are aware enough that they know the oil isn't here,” Cunningham said. “I don't think it's gonna affect tourism, we're trying to garner some interest for our cause."

Marchers were hoping to make it all the way to the Daytona Beach Pier, but their walk was cut short by rough weather.

The group was also protesting offshore oil drilling and wants an end to our country's reliance on oil.

They also believe more alternative power sources should be pushed by the government.
