Hunting for a job: Is the recession really over?

The hunt is on. Some, like Champlain College senior Joe Mester, are on a mission for that first job.
"Coming out as a recent grad we're definitely hungry for the job," Mester said.
Others with years of life experience are looking for their next job.
"I sold a business and now I'm on the unemployment line," said Michael Knox, who's looking for a job.
Either way, many Vermonters here dressed their best, polished their resumes and rehearsed their lines in hopes of finding employment at Champlain College's annual career fair. More than 100 employers from banking to hospitality and graphic design are represented. And the most encouraging thing about Vermont's economy-- they're all hiring.
"It's very encouraging," said Dolly Shaw of Champlain College Career Services. "I mean there's still pockets where the job market is tighter, but I think the job market is much better than I've seen in the last two years. Definitely."
So what's the number one quality these employers are looking for?
"We look for someone that has the aptitude to come in and want to do the work," said Tammy Guilbault of iSystems. "We can teach the skills."
To these employers, first impressions are key. The biggest mistake a prospective employee can make is faking it.
"Really be themselves," advised Janet Kinney of Merchants Bank. "Not trying to say what they think I want them to say but saying what they really have one their mind."
And on the minds of many here-- does age outweigh experience?
"I think somebody that wants me has already decided they are going to hire an older, middle-aged person and someone who wants to hire a younger person is going to hire a younger person," Knox said. "I don't see it as a conflict."
"We may want it just a little more than someone who's been out in the field for awhile and been laid off," Mester said.
"Experience does count for a lot absolutely but the folks coming right out of college these days may be bringing stronger skills on the technical side," Kinney said.
Career fairs are two-way streets. Employers want to fill the spot as much as you want to take it. And the experts say confidence, patience and a good thank you note can be the key to your next paycheck.
